Bindi Use in ReligionBindi plays the most important role in Hindu culture. Every morning a Hindi takes a bath and sits in prayer, seeking the absolute truth through every prayer. However, one cannot sit in prayer the whole day. When you leave the room, you are expected to put some mark on your forehead, to remind yourself throughout the day about the activities and purpose of life. It is obvious you cannot always see the mark on your own forehead, but you will see it on the faces of others. This idea is to help your dedication towards achieving the supreme goal of self realization.
Ever heard of the "Third eye"? The positioning of the Bindi in between the eyebrows is actually very purposeful. The area, called the agna chakra, is said to control various levels of concentration attained through meditation. It is a way to focus the mind based on the location of the “third eye” and it can also be a good way to remind one’s self of God each day |
Bindi Use in SocietyIn society, the Bindi also serves a purpose of categorizing people into groups. The social purpose is to ward off the evil eye of the young unmarried girl by giving her a "black" Bindi. The married women wore a red Bindi. The 4 castes also wore different colored tilak, though it varies among the families in villages.
